A group of senior UN human rights experts — including the UN Working Group on Enforced Disappearances, Francesca Albanese (Special Rapporteur on the occupied Palestinian territories), and Michael Fakhri (Special Rapporteur on the right to food) — condemned the forcible disappearance of starving Palestinians at GHF food centers, warning it amounts to torture and a war crime.
“Reports of enforced disappearances targeting starving civilians seeking their basic right to food is not only shocking, but amounts to torture. Using food as a tool to conduct targeted and mass disappearances needs to end now,” they said, citing cases in Rafah — including a child — of people who vanished after seeking aid.
The experts said the Israeli military is directly involved, and is refusing to disclose the fate of detainees, in violation of the absolute prohibition of enforced disappearance under international law.
They added that “increased reports of enforced disappearances at aid distribution points will discourage individuals from accessing essential food assistance, further aggravating the risk of starvation.” The experts urged dismantling what they called an “inhumane” GHF system, restoring UN-led aid, and immediate investigations to hold perpetrators accountable.
