Hundreds of media outlets, coordinated by the advocacy platform Avaaz and Reporters Without Borders (RSF), have launched a global campaign demanding protection for Palestinian journalists in Gaza, the urgent evacuation of those seeking to leave, accountability for Israeli attacks on reporters, and unrestricted access for foreign media to the territory.

RSF figures show that in less than 23 months, 220 journalists have been killed by the Israeli army in Gaza. On the night of 10 August alone, six journalists were killed in a targeted strike on Al Jazeera correspondent Anas al-Sharif. Just days later, on 25 August, five more journalists were killed in consecutive Israeli airstrikes.

Today, media organisations from more than 50 countries are taking part in a coordinated show of solidarity with Gaza’s journalists, joining forces with RSF and Avaaz. The campaign includes partial or complete front-page blackouts in print media, banners on digital outlets, and messages aired on radio and television.

Following the call issued in June by RSF and the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), participating outlets are uniting behind three demands:

  • Protection for Palestinian journalists and an end to impunity for Israeli army crimes against them in Gaza.
  • Independent access for foreign press to the territory.
  • Safe evacuation and host country support for Palestinian journalists seeking refuge abroad.

Activists who gained access to the widely condemned Great Israeli Real Estate Event in London have shared photos with Al Jazeera that show property in illegal settlements being marketed. London: More than 100 people were arrested for allegedly supporting Palestine Action, now a proscribed organization. Some were elderly. Some were reportedly in their 80s and 90s. Some stood silently holding placards.
