The report by UN Women estimates that more than 38,000 women and girls were killed during the period, accounting for over half of the total deaths reported in Gaza since the start of Israel’s military offensive in October 2023.
It also found that peaks in female and child casualties coincided with large-scale destruction of civilian infrastructure, including homes, schools and shelters. Around 11,000 women and girls are believed to have suffered permanent disabilities as a result of the ongoing genocide.
Beyond the death toll, the UN warned that women in Gaza face worsening humanitarian conditions, including limited access to healthcare, housing and reproductive services, while many have been forced into new roles as heads of households amid widespread displacement.
The agency called for women and girls to be placed at the centre of humanitarian response and reconstruction efforts, stressing that supporting women-led organisations is critical for both immediate relief and long-term recovery.
