A new investigation by the Israeli human rights group B’Tselem says that the widespread destruction of essential infrastructure in the Gaza Strip has directly contributed to the deaths of at least 39 local residents, more than half of whom were children, following severe weather events in late 2025 and early 2026.
According to the organisation, the collapse of vital systems such as power, water, sanitation, medical facilities, and shelter has left civilians uniquely exposed to the elements. Heavy rains and winter storms between December 2025 and January 2026 overwhelmed already damaged buildings, displacement camps, and makeshift shelters, resulting in the deaths of 22 minors and 17 adults as structures failed to withstand the weather.
B’Tselem emphasises that the underlying cause of these fatalities was not the natural weather alone but the near‑total breakdown of Gaza’s public infrastructure — much of it the result of sustained bombardment and demolition during prolonged hostilities. The organisation argues that without functioning electricity grids, pumping stations, hospitals, or adequate shelter, ordinary hazards became lethal.
In its statement this week, B’Tselem framed the deaths as part of a broader pattern of human rights violations tied to Israel’s decades‑long occupation and the recent campaign in Gaza. The group urged international bodies and civil society to push for measures that would prevent further loss of life and restore critical services for civilians.
