The recent Israeli military operation in the West Bank city of Tulkarem is not merely a security response; it is a brutal and calculated act of collective punishment designed to terrorize a civilian population. In the wake of an improvised explosive device that reportedly injured two Israeli soldiers, Israeli forces have imposed a complete siege, trapping nearly 100,000 residents and launching a campaign of mass detentions. What unfolded was a display of dominance reminiscent of actions seen in the Gaza Strip.
A Brutal Show of Force
Witnesses and video footage depict a horrifying scene: long queues of Palestinian men—including the elderly, children, doctors, and lawyers—marched through the streets with their hands on the shoulders of the person in front. This “show of humiliation,” as it has been described, was part of an operation that resulted in the mass detention of over a thousand Palestinians in Tulkarem alone.

Tactic of psychological subjugation
These detentions are often arbitrary, with many detainees released after hours of being held in public squares without questioning. According to the Palestinian Prisoners’ Society, the objective is not to find culprits but to instill fear and break the spirit of the residents. This pattern of behavior is not new; it is, as Suleiman Bsharat of the Yabous Center for Strategic Studies notes, an “old practice” aimed at asserting total control.
Beyond Tulkarem: A System of Mass Incarceration
The events in Tulkarem are part of a far broader and more alarming trend. Since October 2023, the Palestinian Prisoners’ Society reports that Israeli forces have carried out over 19,000 arrests in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. This includes approximately 1,550 children. While the exact figure of those detained in Tulkarem varies by source, with some reports citing over 1,500 arrests, the scale of the operation is undeniable.
Human rights organizations have documented that Israeli forces have seized Palestinian homes, expelled residents, and converted the properties into field interrogation centers where physical abuse and torture are reportedly used.
This systematic detention and mistreatment of civilians is an explicit violation of international law. As the world remains fixated on the devastation in Gaza, the Israeli government continues to use this unchecked power to advance its political aims, including the expansion of illegal settlements and the dismantling of any hope for a future Palestinian state.
