The United Nations has renewed its call for an independent investigation into the torture and inhumane treatment of Palestinian detainees held in Israeli custody, amid growing reports from released prisoners, medical staff, and humanitarian organisations documenting severe abuse.
According to UN human rights officials, credible and consistent testimonies point to systematic ill-treatment, including physical violence, humiliation, and other forms of abuse, affecting Palestinians detained across various facilities. The UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights stressed that such allegations must be urgently and independently investigated, describing the reported practices as unacceptable under international law.
The call comes as concern intensifies over the treatment of Palestinian prisoners since the escalation of violence in October 2023, with rights bodies documenting an increasing number of deaths in custody and allegations of widespread torture, including against minors.
UN experts have reiterated that occupying powers are legally bound to uphold human rights protections for detainees and ensure accountability for violations. They have also warned that continued failure to investigate credible allegations risks entrenching impunity.
Palestinian human rights organisations have long argued that abuse in detention is not isolated but part of a broader system of control and punishment affecting Palestinian society as a whole, particularly during mass arrest campaigns across the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip.
The renewed UN appeal adds to growing international scrutiny of detention practices, with rights monitors calling for transparent investigations and full accountability for all reported abuses.
