Concerns are rising over the life and health of Abdullah al-Barghouti, a long-term Palestinian prisoner, after reports that he was injured during an Israeli prison operation at Gilboa Prison earlier last week. Palestinian prisoner rights groups are warning that the incident highlights a pattern of abuse, neglect, and deliberate mistreatment that they say is endangering detainees’ lives.
What Happened at Gilboa Prison
According to statements from the Palestinian Prisoners’ Media Office, Barghouti sustained a head injury during a crackdown by prison guards inside Gilboa, one of Israel’s most secure penitentiaries. The office says a guard struck his head against a metal door while escorting him for a family visit, causing visible bleeding near his left eye.
The report emphasized that Barghouti’s health was already in severe decline, pointing to dramatic weight loss and alleged neglect by prison authorities. The statements also described the incident as one in a series of abusive actions that collectively threaten his life.
Israeli officials have not publicly commented on the specific allegations about Barghouti’s injury or the broader treatment of prisoners during this operation.
Who Is Abdullah al-Barghouti?
Abdullah al-Barghouti is a senior figure in the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of Hamas, and has been held in Israeli custody since 2003. He was convicted in Israeli courts for involvement in multiple bombings and attacks during the Second Intifada that killed dozens of Israeli civilians, receiving a sentence of 67 life terms—the longest recorded sentence in Israeli prisons.
Barghouti’s imprisonment has made him one of the most prominent Palestinian detainees. His case has repeatedly surfaced in international human rights discussions, partly because of the extreme length of his sentence and concerns raised by rights groups over prison conditions.
Allegations of Abuse and Neglect
Last week’s report builds on earlier allegations from prisoner rights activists and Barghouti’s family. They say he has endured severe weight loss and has been subjected to what they describe as a hunger or “starvation” policy in prison. Similar claims have been made in previous months, pointing to systemic mistreatment inside Israeli detention facilities, including beatings, denial of medical care, and harsh confinement conditions.
These allegations have not been independently verified by international monitors, and the Israeli Prison Service has generally denied accusations of systemic abuse, maintaining that it operates within legal and humanitarian frameworks.
