Gaza City is again reeling under a barrage of Israeli air, artillery, and ground operations. In recent weeks, residents report a dramatic escalation in military activity, with entire neighbourhoods reduced to rubble, evacuation orders issued under dire conditions, and the displacement of thousands of desperate civilians. What is unfolding is nothing short of a humanitarian disaster, one that testimony and independent observers say is approaching unprecedented levels of suffering.
The Israeli Forces (IDF) have declared they will employ “unprecedented force” in Gaza City, with an expanded ground operation in central and western districts.
Dozens of residential buildings—including high-rise towers—have been destroyed. Airstrikes and shelling are frequent, often targeting densely populated areas where civilians are sheltering. Leaflets dropped by the Israeli military have urged residents to evacuate via designated routes, especially southward toward areas such as al-Mawasi. But those routes are often the only ones available, severely overcrowded, poorly resourced, and sometimes themselves under threat.
The number of people fleeing Gaza City has surged, with estimates ranging in the hundreds of thousands. Many do not have access to reliable transport, or are too vulnerable to move safely. Among them are the injured, the elderly, pregnant women, and children. The United Nations says up to 15 thousand people are being displaced every day in the territory.
Places that Israel designates as “safe zones,” notably al-Mawasi, are overwhelmed. Reports describe lack of water, sanitation, shelter, food, and medical care. Some displaced return north despite the danger, citing “no safety” in the south either.
Human rights groups—Amnesty International among them—say the order for mass displacement of Gaza City’s residents is unlawful under international humanitarian law.
For many, the choice is between danger from bombardment and slow death from displacement.
