In just two days, Israel has razed 50 buildings and hundreds of tents in Gaza City, in a campaign designed to push as many as a million Palestinians into the south.
Witnesses describe scenes of devastation and despair. One woman recounted being warned just an hour before the Al-Rouya residential tower was obliterated:
“We didn’t have time to take anything… I left my things as they were and ran away, with small children in tow.”
Nearby, displaced families—already uprooted by earlier strikes—scrambled through rubble, searching in vain for their belongings and even the most basic provisions like clothes, food, and shelter. “We’ve come here and found nothing… We don’t know where to go,” lamented one husband.
Civil Defense authorities confirmed that, in addition to flattening at least 50 residential towers, hundreds of tents, mosques, playgrounds, and partial structures had also been destroyed—effectively sending thousands of civilians into a humanitarian abyss.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu signalled the intent behind these strikes in a chilling statement: “In the past two days, 50 of these towers have fallen… this is just an introduction… You have been warned. Get out of there!”
This campaign builds on days of escalating assaults. On September 6, Israeli forces urged civilians to head to “humanitarian zones” in southern Gaza, followed by bombing at least one high-rise without verifiable evidence it was used by militants—Palestinians say it was serving as a shelter.
By September 7, three more residential towers—including Al-Roya, Sousi, and Mushtaha—were destroyed in successive strikes, killing dozens, including near aid distribution centers and schools housing displaced civilians.
On September 9, evacuation leaflets rained down over Gaza City, warning of an imminent ground offensive. Panic spread as Palestinians questioned where they could possibly flee—hospitals were being evacuated, hunger was mounting, and safe refuge was disappearing fast.
Aid agencies and UN officials have repeatedly stressed that large-scale displacement under these conditions only deepens the humanitarian catastrophe. Gaza is already facing famine, infrastructure collapse, and mass displacement, with no relief in sight.
International organizations like Human Rights Watch have previously warned that such forced evacuation and destruction could constitute “deliberate and massive forced displacement,” potentially amounting to crimes against humanity or ethnic cleansing under international law.
