A recent investigation by +972 Magazine, in collaboration with The Guardian and Local Call, has uncovered classified Israeli military intelligence data revealing that a staggering 83% of Palestinians killed in Gaza were civilians. This figure starkly contradicts Israeli officials’ repeated claims that most casualties were militants, highlighting a deliberate distortion of facts to justify the ongoing military campaign.
Israeli authorities have consistently asserted that their operations in Gaza are precise, targeting militants while minimizing civilian harm. However, the leaked database indicates that of the 53,000 Palestinians reported dead as of May 2025, only 8,900 were identified as members of Hamas or Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ). This discrepancy suggests that the vast majority of fatalities were non-combatants, including women, children, and the elderly.

Further compounding the issue, Israeli officials initially claimed that over 10,000 militants had been killed. Internal assessments, however, revealed that the actual number was significantly lower. This inflation of militant casualty figures appears to be a strategic move to portray the military campaign as more successful and justified than it truly was.
Human rights organizations and legal scholars have expressed grave concerns over these revelations. Amnesty International has concluded that Israel’s actions in Gaza amount to genocide, citing widespread civilian deaths and starvation tactics. Similarly, Human Rights Watch has documented indiscriminate and disproportionate attacks by Israeli forces, violating international humanitarian law.

Accountability Cannot Wait
The leaked Israeli military data exposes a brutal reality: Gaza’s civilian population is bearing the overwhelming cost of a conflict framed as a fight against militants. Tens of thousands of innocent men, women, and children have been killed while official narratives inflate militant casualties to justify the carnage. The deliberate distortion of facts, the mechanization of killing through AI targeting, and the blatant disregard for international humanitarian law reveal a campaign that is not only unethical but morally indefensible.
The international community can no longer tolerate rhetoric that conceals mass civilian deaths. Silence in the face of such systematic devastation is complicity. Israel’s military leadership must be held accountable for what amounts to state-sanctioned civilian slaughter, and global institutions must act decisively to prevent further atrocities. The world cannot look away while Gaza bleeds.
