Israel’s “Legitimization Cell”: Manufacturing Lies to Kill Journalists

History will record not only the bombs that fell on Gaza, but the silence that fell on Washington, London, and Brussels. And one day, when the question is asked — how could journalists be hunted with such impunity? — the answer will be written in Western complicity.

The revelation of Israel’s so-called “Legitimization Cell” should shake anyone who still clings to the illusion that the war on Gaza is a conventional military conflict. It is not. It is an orchestrated campaign of erasure, disinformation, and assassination, where the press itself has become a target.

A bombshell investigation by +972 Magazine exposed this secret Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) unit, that was created after October 7, 2023, with one primary mission: to smear Gaza-based journalists as Hamas operatives in order to justify killing them.

Let’s pause here: this isn’t just “collateral damage.” This is a state-led project to delegitimize journalism itself — and then pull the trigger.

The Legitimization Cell systematically compiles and circulates intelligence — sometimes accurate, sometimes manipulated — to brand journalists as Hamas operatives. Analysts outside the cell were also encouraged to contribute any information that could “help Israel in the information war.” The unit reportedly used the internal slogan: “This is good for legitimacy.”

Journalism as a Death Sentence

Take the case of Anas al-Sharif, an Al Jazeera reporter. The Legitimization Cell combed through scraps of intelligence, twisting and exaggerating claims to paint him as a Hamas fighter. He wasn’t. He was a journalist reporting on Israel’s destruction of Gaza. But labeling him a “terrorist” gave Israel the cover it needed.

As one intelligence source admitted:

“If the global media is talking about Israel killing innocent journalists, then immediately there is pressure to find a journalist who might not be so innocent.“

This isn’t intelligence work. It’s a propaganda hit list.

“Find as much material as possible for hasbara.”

The Cell does more than smear reporters. It fabricates narratives to prolong the war itself. Remember the bombing of Gaza’s Al-Ahli Hospital in October 2023, which killed around 500 Palestinians? Within hours, Israel released a supposed Hamas wiretap blaming the blast on Palestinian Islamic Jihad. Western media parroted it.

That tape, now widely discredited, was circulated by the very same Legitimization Cell. Its purpose wasn’t truth. Its purpose was to buy Israel diplomatic breathing space, to muddy the waters, and to make sure the United States and Europe stayed onside.

When civilians die, when hospitals collapse, when Gaza starves, Israel doesn’t just send in bombs. It sends in spin.

The War on Truth

We should be clear: targeting journalists is not an accident. It is a strategy.

Killing a reporter silences testimony. Smearing them as “Hamas operatives” ensures the silence sticks. And all the while, Israel gets to reassure the world that it operates “in line with international law.” The Legitimization Cell is the PR wing of a military occupation that fears exposure more than rockets.

The numbers speak for themselves: Gaza has become the most dangerous place in the world for journalists. Reporters Without Borders, the Committee to Protect Journalists, and human rights organizations have documented case after case of targeted strikes on press crews, media offices, and even the families of journalists.

Israel’s answer? They were “terrorists in disguise.” Always. Conveniently.

Why This Matters Beyond Gaza

Make no mistake: this is not just about Palestine. It is about the criminalization of journalism itself. If a state can unilaterally declare reporters “terrorists” and execute them with impunity, what happens to press freedom anywhere?

The Legitimization Cell is a warning shot to the world. It tells us that the rules of war — the protections for civilians, the safeguards for truth-tellers — can be rewritten in real time, if you have the military power and the media echo chamber to back you up.

And yet, Western capitals remain silent. Washington, London, Brussels — the same governments that preach about the sanctity of a free press — continue to fund and arm Israel, even as journalists are smeared, hunted, and killed.

If the killing of reporters can be justified with a forged intelligence file, then the very idea of journalism in war zones collapses. That is the real victory of the Legitimization Cell: not just the murder of individuals, but the assassination of truth itself.

History will not forget this.

When future generations ask how Israel was able to starve, bomb, and silence an entire people under the gaze of the world, the answer will include this: a hidden unit that turned journalists into targets, and democracies that looked away.

“We call upon everyone, journalists, activists, anyone who can help us spread the word. We are the community of Um al-Kheir and our children, our students are facing a blockade by the settlers. It’s important to stand with us to reclaim our right of walking safely to the school from the hysterical walking path that the settlers have blocked.
