The Palestinian activist recorded the instant Israeli settler Yinon Levi fatally shot him.
Footage released by B’Tselem, filmed by al-Hathaleen himself, shows Levi aiming and firing. The recording cuts abruptly as the wounded activist collapses.
Awdah al-Hathaleen, a human rights defender and resident of the village of Umm al-Kheir in the South Hebron Hills, was killed on July 28 by live fire from Levi.
The settler, previously sanctioned by the United States for violent attacks against Palestinians, had entered the Masafer Yatta community of Umm al-Kheir with an excavator. When residents tried to drive him away, he opened fire, killing al-Hathaleen. The following day, police released him and placed him under house arrest, citing lack of evidence and accepting his claim of self-defense.
On August 1, Levi was freed from house arrest. Three days later, on August 4, he was again filmed trespassing on Umm al-Kheir land, this time accompanied by another armed settler.
In Gaza and the West Bank, Palestinians remain fully exposed to Israeli violence, stripped of rights and left without protection. Awdah’s killing is yet another stark example of how the world stands by as Israelis — soldiers or civilians — kill Palestinians in broad daylight, confident they will face no consequences.
